As we reflect on Women’s History Month, Collective Power: Women Artists Shaping Downtown New York revisits the feminist collectives that transformed the city’s art world—and revives the spirit of consciousness-raising that shaped them.

Presented by the Milton Resnick and Pat Passlof Foundation in collaboration with Less Than Half and On This Spot NYC: Stories of Pioneering Women Artists, the evening features short documentary screenings and a discussion exploring the collaborations that enabled women artists to challenge exclusion and reshape downtown New York from the 1960s to the present.

The program opens with a short documentary on Pat Passlof and the origins of the Foundation she helped establish, followed by remarks from Susan Reynolds, its Director.

Featured archival On This Spot videos highlight collectives including:

  • Kate Millett’s Art Colony – A feminist experiment in art, community, and collective living

  • Heresies Collective – A radical feminist magazine redefining art and politics

  • COLAB – Artists confronting inequality in the art world

  • Godzilla – Asian American artists challenging stereotypes and reclaiming identity

  • Guerrilla Girls – Exposing sexism and inequality in art

A panel discussion includes: Nina Yankowitz (Heresies artist); Cara Perlman (COLAB artist); and Nina Kuo (Godzilla artist).  Moderated by Hall W. Rockefeller (Less Than Half) and Loretta Howard (On This Spot).

An evening of film and conversation examining how women artists used collective power to challenge exclusion—and how that legacy continues to shape cultural dialogue today.

Our event takes place during the current exhibition How Asian Is it? curated by Lilly Wei.

Attendance limited; a recording will be available. For additional information, please contact: Team@OnThisSpotNYC.org. Seats are first come, first served.
